Why
We Joined FamilyLife
Each family is an
irreplaceable stitch in the fabric of social order. When one
stitch unravels, the fabric is weakened. As more stitches unravel,
the fabric tears. You can hear the sound of unraveling every day.
Most of the sounds are common, but agonizing nonetheless: An
anguished wife discovers her husband's adultery; a teenager gives in to
negative peer pressure; another mother leaves home; a discouraged parent
cries out for hope. Many of the sounds are muffled - rarely do
they make the evening news. Others are public proclamations of
family heartache. Against such sounds, can the voice of one family
be heard? The problem is clear... values are declining, divorce is
rampant, an entire culture seems locked in a downward spiral. Too
many times we feel helpless to go against the tide.
How can we fight this? Where do we start? We start at home—yours and mine. A distracted father retreats to the comforting
isolation of his career while telling himself that he is
"sacrificing" to provide for his family. His
disillusioned wife resents her mate and secretly wishes for an end to
their marriage. Their disgruntled children take refuge in the
comfort of their peers' approval as they wander directionless into an
uncertain future. Another stitch unravels. Another home is
lost. This is NOT God's plan for the family!
The most pivotal
issue before our nation today is not crime, welfare, health care,
education, politics, the economy, or the media. The most pivotal
issue before our nation is the spiritual and moral condition of our
families. Real change must begin—and can only begin—with
individuals. When enough Christians kneel on the ground, strike a
spiritual match and light a fire for Christ, then and only then will
real reform begin. Societies are destroyed one family at a time;
they are rebuilt in exactly the same fashion. It will take
courageous action from individuals and families to truly make a
difference.
